So you got another promotion! Great! A promotion makes everyone happy and satisfied. Sure, you have jealous friends trying to run you down. But you are happy...so happy that you forget to prepare to be a boss.
Now you may think that being a boss does not require any preparations. But this is not true. Being a boss is like walking on a tight rope and takes a lot of maturity, understanding and patience. A boss does not always get to order people around all the time. Being a boss means being responsible and accountable for ALL your subordinates. To make matters worse, your subordintes are probably bitching about you all the time. Feeling bitter? Here's what you need to do to be considered a good boss...
Set An Example: Your team is constantly watching you. If there's anything you want them to do, set an example. If you wish to inculcate the habit of reaching the office in time, make sure you arrive on time every morning.
Pay Attention: You have probably said this a lot of times to your team. But do you pay attention yourself? Keep your focus on how the team is working on a day to day basis. Keep yourself involved in everything so there there are no unpleasant surprises lurking around.
Don't Ignore: Don't ever make the mistake of ignoring your team's mistakes. If you ignore one mistake, they will expect you to ignore every mistake. Pointing out mistakes later will lead to failed expectations, resistance and misery.
Be A Distant Friend: A boss cannot be a friend because of the nature of the "boss-subordinate" relationship. But there needs to be an element of friendship in this relationship. However, don't try to get too close to your juniors.
Earn Respect: Avoid cracking sick jokes and doing other things that show you in a bad light in front of your subordinates. Maintain a decent and respectful behavior with your subs. Respect them and they will respect you.
Don't Vent Your Frustration: Often bosses shout at their subs simply because they can. Remember that your subs are not your punching bags. Treat them respectfully.
Be Helpful: Your subs come to you with problems that you HAVE TO solve. If you cannot help them in doing their job, you cannot be a good boss!
In short, be a good human being and a good worker if you wish to be considered a good boss.
